So, you think you’re ready to take the step into competitive gaming? From picking the right game to understanding what it takes to compete at the highest level – let’s dive in on how to get started in Esports.
1. Pick your Game
If you’re considering getting into Esports, then you probably already have a game in mind. League of Legends, Valorant, Counterstrike 2, Valorant, Apex Legends, Fortnite – all of these titles are what are considered “competitive” gaming titles. However, you don’t have to pick one of the big names to get started.
Find a game that you excel at. One that you seem to find easier than your friends or one that you’re passionate about. Then stick at it. Just like everything in life, perfection comes from practice and you won’t be able to compete at the highest level of your game unless you practice! If you’re climbing ranks easily or seem to be ahead of your teammates, this is a good sign you’ve picked the right game.
Once your confident in which game you want to go Pro in, it’s time to grind.
2. Don’t tilt! Mentality & Grinding
A strong and positive mentality in gaming is fundamental to success when it comes to Esports. If you’re familiar with any form of Ranked or Competitive game modes – you’ll know of the sometimes toxic and tilting environment that can be experienced when trying to win. But don’t worry! This is an experience every Pro has gone through. It’s tough out there, but when it comes to getting started it’s an experience shared.
That’s why a positive attitude and a strong mental game can ensure your win-rate stays high and you climb your ranked ladder.
However, don’t burn out too fast! Once you’ve got stuck into a game you enjoy – it can be easy to grind that game until you feel burntout and frustrated. Remember to take healthy breaks and maybe only play 3 – 5 games a day. Maybe only even 1! What’s important is that when you do play your game, you try hard and focus on winning.
3. Focus on your mistakes, positively
You aren’t Pro yet – don’t convince yourself you are and start blaming your teammates! Everyone makes mistakes and you aren’t excluded in that statement. Focus on VOD reviews, practice mechanics within your game like aim training or reaction training.
Review each Ranked game and look at where you went wrong, misplays and and unlucky moments and focus on how you can improve for when that situation comes again!
Does your game have a training mode? Jump in and practice, practice, practice. It might be a common theme in this article, but it’s true. Training is what will help you succeed in Esports.
4. Get known in your niche
Once you’ve climbed your ranked ladder, make sure you have a positive reputation and become a player people look up to. Don’t be toxic, don’t tilt and don’t flame – we promise you that it’ll only hinder your success in the future! There have been many occasions where a players toxic behaviour in-game has caused them to lose opportunities and be kicked from their teams.
5. Find a team!
There are plenty “grass roots” esports leagues and semi-pro teams that want you on their team. Look for competitive leagues in your chosen game and apply for a spot! You’ll most likely go through a tryout phase and if you’re successful, you’re on your way to becoming pro!
There are lots of ways to get started in Esports, but the most important one is to stay positive and keep practicing.
We wish you the best in your Esports journey!
